Game of Thrones 1.05 The Wolf and the Lion

Cut for series spoilers and possible book spoilers.

- Ned was better-handled in this episode than he's been otherwise, showing more of the hardline Stark characterization that's supposed to define him -- overall I find Bean!Ned to be too friendly, too handsome, too nice and easy to like; it casts an even harsher light on characters that don't take to him, and while that's okay for some people it should be more apparent that Stark unfriendliness and high-and-mighty judgmentalness are, in fact, offputting.  In terms of the sympathetic side of that, though, his resignation scene with Robert was great.  Loved it.
- Not being in Ned's biased narrative head, though, makes Robert even more unsympathetic, and thus Cersei unintentionally sympathetic.
- Tyrion!  Tyrion Tyrion Tyrion!  Tyrion!!  Tyrion!!!  He met Bronn this time!  Beginning of a beautiful friendship!  Tyrion and Bronn's guy love (and Tyrion's asskicking at the Eyrie)!  Every little thing he does is lovable.  He on the other hand makes everyone look bad who doesn't like him, which isn't a bad thing at all.
- Totally loved how Jaime was handled this ep -- killing Jory was really where I started hating him in the books, since not knowing his relationship with Tyrion yet it comes off like he does it purely out of feeling insulted on his family's behalf.  I hope it was as infuriating for unspoiled first-time viewers as it is for unspoiled first-time readers.  I dig the facial expressions his actor makes, though, like the cocky "you're right!" at Ned and his grim face when Jory attacks him.
- Oh man, Loras in the tourney was awesome, as was his and Renly's little smirking session -- I'm really glad they included this much Loras and Renly, my only objection being that their power dynamic seems kind of fucked?  Renly's the pretty finger-wrapping-around manipulative one with smitten hot-headed sword genius Loras at his enamored beck and call.  It seems kind of opposite here.  I dunno how they're going to work that with King Renly later.  But still, I dig Loras's handling in general, he just seems a bit too suave and manipulative.
- I loved the glimpses of Sandor in this one -- how readily he broke up the fight between Loras and Gregor, how automatically and sharply he dropped to his knee when Robert called him off.  Loras did the classy thing by raising Sandor's arm, too.
- No Vaes Dothrak or Wall?  Good choice, I think.
- Petyr and Varys are like the bitchiest celebrity gossips, I kind of love them.
- They cut out "mummers, Arya" :(
